Every year around 6 to 8 million animals are brought into the US shelters. Sadly half of those end up being euthanized. Animals do not use any form of contraception and they can reproduce at an alarming rate. An adult female cat can have up to 3 litters per year with 4 – 6 kittens in each litter. That’s a total of 12 – 18 kittens from a single mother cat in a year.
Imagine if we multiple that number by thousands. No wonder we keep seeing more and more feral cats emerging on the streets. There is one way to save those cats is to spay and neuter them. The Humane Society of the United States is trying to inspire people to spay and neuter their pets by organizing an official Spay Day on the last Tuesday of every February. This year, the Spay Day lands on the 23rd.

Many organizations and veterinary clinics are also campaigning for the Spay Day. A group of veterinarians from the Washington area are offering discounts for spaying and neutering on that day. The Arizona Humane Society is encouraging people to bring in their pets to get them spayed or neutered free of charge.

Great info!! I volunteer with a trap-neuter-return group in my area to help reduce the homeless cat population. We are also helping reduce the number of ferals brought into the shelter. Sadly, ferals cannot be adopted and are euthanized.
It is very sad. Thank you so much for helping out with trap-neuter-return. it can really make a difference.
