A man couldn't find a scratching post he liked for his beloved cat, so decided to build one in the shape of their neighbor's dog.

"My studio-neighbour had a Labrador that walked in once in a while chewing on stuff I had lying around on the floor, and I just joked one time I would make a scratchpost out of him for my 'Gerrit'.. Which made me think how funny it would actually be so I made one," Erik Stehmann told Love Meow.

The scratching post is called DOG, with a smaller version named PUP. "Because it was such a success to me, I presented it at the Dutch Design Week 2011 next to my other new designs, and since then there are more then 400 cats with DOGs worldwide."

Erik said some cats might feel a bit intimidated by the the scratching post just like having a new piece of large furniture in the house, but "as soon as they are close enough to smell they seem to realize this isn't a living animal and a sort of relief comes over them as they jump on the DOG and start scratching, looking at their owner with a face that says: 'Am I really doing this?'" Erik said.

"The DOG has much more scratching area then a regular scratch post. Every inch of rope is glued to the polyester base. We use a thick rope to make it very durable and should stand out several years to come," Erik said.
