A stray cat showed up in a family's yard and left her kitten who needed help.
A week ago, a resident from Montreal, Canada spotted a community cat outside her home with a kitten, but the stray soon ran off and left her feline baby behind.
When the homeowner came out to check on the kitten, she realized that the tabby was sickly and missing one eye. The family waited for the mother cat to come back but she never returned.
They knew the kitten needed their help and brought her to a veterinary clinic (Hôpital Vétérinaire Journet) for medical attention. Chatons Orphelins Montréal, a local rescue group, stepped up to help and took the little one into their care.
"We named her Unna. She was sick and just skin and bones, weighing only 480 grams," Celine Crom of Chatons Orphelins Montréal told Love Meow.
The veterinary team immediately started her on medication for an infection and pain. "She had an infected eye. The vet believes it was so severe that she got it out herself."
"Unna will have surgery to close the eye socket when she is big enough. As of now, she has a lot of growing to do."
The kitty had little to no contact with people prior to the rescue and was very afraid, but that was about to change when she met her foster mom, Maria, who works at the clinic.
To help Unna gain trust and confidence, Maria decided to spend as much time with her as possible, carrying her around the house and bringing her to work every day, so she would never feel alone.
"Unna had to be socialized to learn to love this new life with humans. When she's wrapped up in a purrito, she loves it and falls asleep in it," Celine said.
In just two days, the kitten began to accept love and relax. "Now she goes everywhere with her foster mom in her little bag like a baby kangaroo."
Unna gets to meet clients at the hospital and learn to socialize along the way. With medication, she is no longer in pain. The little tabby has grown attached to her foster mom who dotes on her constantly with hugs and kisses.
"She is just a normal kitty with one eye. Hopefully, in three weeks, she will be ready for surgery, recovery and then a forever home."
"Unna lost her eye while she was wandering the streets with her cat mom. This sweet kitty has adapted so well to her comfortable new life since," Celine said.
"She loves cuddles and is thriving."
The shy kitty has blossomed into a friendly, playful, happy girl.
