On a cold and rainy day last month, a property manager at an apartment complex heard faint cries and decided to investigate.
They traced the sound to a hollow tree stump that was filling up with rainwater and discovered three freezing kittens huddled inside. The manager immediately scooped them out and called Animal Care Services for help.
Officer Harper responded to the urgent request and arrived at the complex shortly after.

With the kittens secured, she rushed them to FieldHaven Feline Center to get them the care they needed.
The trio was alert and active, their cries a hopeful sign they would pull through. At just five weeks old, they were underweight and starving. "Who knew when their last meal was," FieldHaven Feline Center shared with Love Meow.

"We had to carefully warm them before feeding them, so we got right to work."
They worked tirelessly for hours to bring their temperatures back to normal, clean them, and remove all the pesky fleas. After feeding the kittens, they settled them into a warm, cozy space to rest.

"One of the tiny tabbies was lounging in the paper food tray, also commonly used as a fresh fry dish, with his brother on top of him. It was at this point that we named them Hamburger (the biggest one with smudges of black), Side of Fries (the smaller one in the food tray), and Malt (the tabby sister)."
Keely, a volunteer, took the trio home to foster and was quickly charmed by their lovable personalities.

"They just wanted to snuggle and rest. They were very sweet and loved attention, especially head massages and ear rubs," Keely shared with Love Meow.
The kittens arrived with ravenous appetites, determined to grow big and strong. "They were very eager to learn how to eat. They would get so messy when they ate and spent a lot of time standing in the food."

The kittens often get food all over their paws, but they don't mind getting cleaned up. To Keely's surprise, they relax in warm baths and enjoy the extra attention.
At mealtime, the trio follows their foster mom like ducklings in tow. "They know who feeds them."

"They are very playful and enjoy the company of our resident cats. They love snuggling each other and being close. When they sleep, they are always together. I would be the happiest foster mom if they all were to be adopted together once they are big enough."
Malt and Side of Fries are the chattiest of the bunch. If they want something, they make sure their voices are heard.

"They will let you know with their persistent and strong meows. Hamburger, on the other hand, is a little more soft-spoken and a little less demanding. Hamburger has a quiet, squeaky, and very polite meow."
The kittens enjoy their newfound freedom to explore beyond their playpen. They confidently play with the resident cats, zooming around as if they own the place.

"They run and play with little spring toys and sparkly balls. They also like this stuffed fish toy that is bigger than them."
A couple of weeks ago, these kittens were found in a tree trunk, clinging to each other for dear life. Now, they are thriving in a loving foster home with boundless food, plenty of toys, and the warm company of their human and feline friends.
