Nature’s Variety Pet Food Recall


Nature’s Variety has expanded a recall of its Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diets for both cats and dogs to include additional “Best If Used By” dates. The company issued a nationwide voluntary recall last month on its Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet chicken medallions, patties and chubs with a “Best If Used By” date of Nov. 10, 2010, due to concerns of salmonella contamination.


We want to inform you that Nature’s Variety has initiated a voluntary recall of our Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet for dogs and cats with the “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10 because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella.The only products affected are limited to chicken medallions, patties, and chubs with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10.This includes:

  • 3 lb chicken medallions (UPC# 7 69949 60130 2) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10
  • 6 lb chicken patties (UPC# 7 69949 60120 3) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10
  • 2 lb chicken chubs (UPC# 7 69949 60121 0) with a “Best If Used By” date of 11/10/10

The company also decided to clear the market of all of its raw frozen chicken products and replace them with new ones that have been pasteurized. Therefore, the company is also recalling its Chicken Formula and Organic Chicken Formula raw frozen diets for dogs and cats that have a “Best If Used By” date on or before Feb. 5, 2011:

The products included in this expanded recall are any Chicken Formula or Organic Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet with a “Best If Used By” date on or before 2/5/11, including:

  • UPC#7 69949 60130 2 – Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions
  • UPC#7 69949 60120 3 – Chicken Formula 6 lb patties
  • UPC#7 69949 60121 0 – Chicken Formula 2 lb single chubs
  • UPC#7 69949 50121 3 – Chicken Formula 12 lb retail display case of chubs
  • UPC#7 69949 60137 1 – Organic Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions
  • UPC#7 69949 60127 2 – Organic Chicken Formula 6 lb patties

We saw this and we have to say it impressed us, because they were proactive about the recall (notice it is a voluntary recall – when I first heard about this they stated the recall was because of a chance of salmonella – not that anyone had actually gotten it). I wish that more companies were this responsible!

    OMG.. I used to feed this raw food to my cats two years ago. Thank god i stopped.

    This recall was initiated as I understand it to protect the pet owner not the pet. Animals have a much shorter digestive system and the chance of them being affected by salmonella is extremely low. It was the chance that the pet owner (if they weren't careful and use safe handling methods) could get salmonella. I feed our dogs raw chicken wings for one meal and the Nature's Variety Organic Chicken raw nuggets for the other meal. Our dogs love this. We give them table scraps too, such as steamed veggies and salmon skin. I probably fed them some of the recalled packages too because I hadn't seen the recall and they were never affected, nor were we.
