A litter of wriggly Sand Cat kittens were born at Zoo Tel Aviv Ramat-Gan in Israel early in August this year. It was great news to the zoo keepers since these tiny wild cats are extinct in the wild in Israel and gradually going on a decline in their native habitats in Asia and North Africa according to zooborns.

The mother cat was doing a great job caring for the litter of four squirmy little kittens. They started exploring out of their den at three weeks old.

They are one of the smallest wild cat breeds, next to Rusty-spotted cats. These small, shy animals are adapted to living in the desert. They can thrive in some of world’s most deserted areas. They have large ears that give them acute hearing and work as radiators to release heat.

For the first time in the 168 years of history of the Berlin zoo, they welcomed their first Rusty-Spotted Cats, the world’s smallest wild cats, weighing merely 2.0 to 3.5 lbs (0.9 to 1.6 kg) as adults according to zooborns.

The two little Rusty-Spotted kittens were born on August 5 and have been nursing in their den until recently where they just started exploring around. “At birth, kittens typically weigh just 2.0 – 2.7 ounces (60-77 g).” The rusty-spotted cat rivals the black-footed cat as the world’s smallest wild cat.

Rusty-Spotted cats originated from Sri Lanka and India. Their species are threatened by habitat loss due to the conversion of wild lands to farms.

“LIttle is known about these secretive cats, and few zoos display this species, making these two kittens especially important for the captive population,” reported Zooborns.

A black-footed cat born on Feb 14, was a first for Brookfield Zoo in Illinois. “Hours after his birth, Animal programs staff became concerned about the male kitten’s well-being… To ensure that he had a chance for survival, staff quickly decided to intervene and handrear the kitten at the Chicago Zoological Society’s Animal Hospital, where he received round-the-clock care,” said the zoo.

Three newborn bobcat kittens were found in the woods of Alabama, but they were given a second chance by a black and white house cat named Bobbi.

These 2-week-old wild kittens were brought into Big Cat Rescue in Tampa by Jamie Veronica who drove almost 24 hours on the road even barreling through rainstorms after she received a phone call from a veterinary clinic. The kittens were then bottle fed, but the staff from Big Cat Rescue wanted to provide a feline mother who could eventually teach them the skills necessary to survive in the wild. They contacted many local shelters and finally came across this one cat  named Bobbi.

Bobbi is a former stray cat who just gave birth to her own kittens. The staff of Big Cat Rescue were worried about if she would accept the wild kittens. When Bobbi came out of the carrier, she heard a few faint cries from the wild furry babies. Within a few minutes, she stepped in and started nursing them.

In Leningrad (St Petersburg) Zoo, the oldest zoo in Russia, an European Lynx had a frequent visitor who befriended the big wild cat and now they are practically living together. This visitor is a calico cat who has bonded with the Lynx ever since the day she entered the enclosure.

According to the local people, the calico was homeless and happened to find food in the lynx’s enclosure. The lynx did not reject her, rather she became her surrogate mother. It seems as if the calico needs the lynx as much as she needs the little cat. They spend every day together and never leave sight of each other.

Sand cats are one of the smallest wild cats in the world. They are also an endangered species. Though big wild cats usually are seen at the zoo, the Cincinnati Zoo has been the most recognizable zoo in the US that shows and breeds Sand cats.

Sand cats are very adorable. They are smaller than the domestic cats (an adult Sand cat weighs about 6 pounds on average), but they have several characteristics that make them a terrible choice for a pet. The Sand cat is a very shy wild cat that likes to hide in their cave during the day and comes out to hunt at night. They are nocturnal and prey mostly on rodents, insect and other small critters.
