When there are fishermen on an island in Japan, they always seem to have a group of loyal feline followers. Like the Cat Island in Tashirojima, cats are treated with love and respect by the fishermen in Fukuoka prefecture, situated on the northern shore of the island of Kyushu in Japan.
The cats are welcome into fishermen’s boats, homes as if they are the ones that truly run the shore. Cats are often coddled like part of the fishermen’s families. They feed them daily and play with them whenever the cats demand play time. These island cats seem to have created such a bond with their human friends. It’s amazing to see them fishing together by the shore or just hanging out on the door steps playing with children.

Oh my goodness! It’s like a kitty invasion! So cute!
cuteness overload! i love that island!
i wanna retire here!
i love the kitty going to the store
How absolutely lovely!
Increadible pictures! The angles at which some are taken is remarkable. I am obviously distracted by the fuzzu cuteness, but I can’t help but notice the quality of these pictures
the love for them kitties is identifiable through the len’s glass…beautiful.
Soo many adorable pictures! I love it (:
Love the photos, the cats and kittens are adorable, but do they spay and neuter the cats?
This is how all ferals should be treated; though if some of the cats aren’t fixed soon it will be completely out of control.
lovely kittens! I like the whole island community cares for them ^^
beautiful…..
Oh my god Most of them have Nubs for tails! CUTE
It’s because they’re Japanese Bobtail primarily. Although there is undoubtedly some mixing, and the new-fangled breed called Japanese Bobtail looks little like these, the breeders got the stock from cats who had the genetic disposition to have these tails.
Lovely kitties !!!!:D
Wonderful to see how these cats are treated with love and respect. There was a great worry about these cats from ‘cat island’ after the terrible tsunami. Fortunately, they escaped from the worst of the disaster.
Luckily, the area struck by tsunami was roughly 1500 km away from this island.
Amazing how many of them are either short-tailed or actually tailless! Even the kittens are, so it must be a genetic mutation. What a wonderful story, and beautiful photos!
Beautifully photographed with love and heart!
I adore these cats and I love the people that respect and care for them. If only the rest of the world followed their example…
Love how these cats are treated with care…not to mention the fact that they have an entire beautiful island to roam…This is fantastic!!!!
I’ve always dreamt of living in such an island!; could I apply for a job there?. From Spain.
I want to visit that island
beautiful photos. If I were to be a cat, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else bc that island is filled with wonderful people who adore cats! I want to visit that island some day if I could! Sadly to say though, that island’s population is pretty small so having so many stray cats would eventually overpopulate.
That is award winning photography. Hope you got some awards.
great coverage and photos!
These are handsome and beautiful kitties and oh so loving to look at. I would say they are truly happy Kitties. Mary Ham
FANABULOUS!!
THESE CATS ON THIS ISLAND ARE DAMB LUCKY!!
WELL LOVED,WELL TREATED!! WELL FED!!
AND WELL TAKEN CARE OF!!
I LOOOOVE IT!! GOD BLESS THEM ALL!!
Fabulous photos of happy cats! But spaying and neutering really needs to be done to prevent overpopulation.
I want to go there
cat paradise :3
Amazing photos. Such a great story. Agree on the spay/neuter, but these fishermen and their families are heroes, because they not just feed, but treat the cats like their own families. We need more of this in this world that is so cruel to our feline friends.
Such lovely cats & beautiful pictures!
Awesome pictures! I was so worried for them and their human friends after the tsunami. It’s so good to see them in good shape (pictures taken after or before the catastrophe?)
Amazing photos!!! The Japanese kitties are really cuteeeee!!
iam glad that they are ok after this terrible earthquake
I wonder how many cats are there.. I think I need to move there!
adorable cats
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
omgggg i want to live in that island oAo
I remember that when I first learned to pronounce the Japanese “f” (only to impress my Japanese voice teacher) the example word was “Fukuoka”. Who knew it was such a cat paradise? I am glad I have been muttering this island’s name under my breath for years!
I will be visiting this in the next 5 years.
That sounds like paradise <3
